A spectrometer is a scientific instrument that measures a continuous wavelength of light over a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. These devices are used to identify materials by studying the light emitted from or reflected from the materials. They are commonly used in medical, biochemical, and environmental monitoring industries and helps to identify molecules and examine chemical bonding, characterize and study the structures of materials, studying biominerals, etc. In 2024, several products were launched that made a significant impact on the market. 2 µm - 5 µm, Mid-IR Spectrometers for Optical Coating Measurement Applications
The NLIR-S2050 from NLIR are Mid-infrared Spectrometers that have an optical bandwidth of 2 µm - 5 µm. They have spectral resolutions of 6 cm-1, 3 cm-1 & 2.5 cm-1 with maximum readout rates of 400 Hz, 1.4E3 Hz & 130E3 Hz respectively. These vertically polarised spectrometers have a sensitivity of 130E3 counts/(ms µW) (S2050 - 400), 8E3 counts/(ms µW) (S2050 - 1k), and 1.6E3 count/(ms µW) (S2050 - 130k). The NLIR-S2050 spectrometers are based on the NLIR upconversion technology. They have dark noise of 11 counts (S2050 - 400), 60 counts (S2050 - 1k), and 1 count (S2050 - 130k). These spectrometers require a minimum detectable power (in 100 ms) of 5 pW/nm (S2050 - 400), 75 pW/nm (S2050 - 1k), and 25 pW/nm (S2050 - 130k). They can be controlled via GUI & API interfaces and support SMA-905 fiber connector. 908 nm - 1676 nm, NIR Spectrometer for Industrial Processing Applications
The MicroNIR 1700 ES from Viavi Solutions Inc. is a Near Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer that operates at a wavelength of 908 nm - 1676 nm. It has a spectral resolution of up to 1.25% of center wavelength and pixel-to -pixel interval of 6.2 nm. This spectrometer has a working distance below 15 mm and an integration time of 10 ms. 200 nm - 1000 nm, Photoluminescence Spectrometer for Research Applications
The FLS1000 from Edinburgh Instruments is a Photoluminescence Spectrometer that has a spectral range of 200 nm - 1000 nm. It operates in three modes: Single Photon Counting (SPC), Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC), and Time-Resolved Single Photon Counting (Multi-Channel Scaling - MCS). 350 nm - 2500 nm, VIS/NIR Portable Spectrometer for Mapping Applications
The Terraspec 4 Hi-Res from Malvern Panalytical is a Portable VIS/NIR Spectrometer that operates at a wavelength of 350 nm - 2500 nm. The iHR320 from HORIBA is an Imaging Spectrometer that has a spectral range of 150 nm - 1500 nm (with 1200 g/mm gratings) and 150 nm - 40 µm (with appropriate gratings).
