The IMX542 from Sony Corporation is a 1.1-Type 16.19 MegaPixels CMOS Image Sensor with high-speed edge AI processing. The pixel chip is back-illuminated with a global shutter function. It has an approximate pixel size of 5328(H)×3040(V) with a unit cell size of 2.74 x 2.74 µm for capturing information across a wide-angle of view and supports a frame rate from 35 to 52 fps. In addition to the conventional image sensor operation circuit, it is equipped with Sony's original DSP (Digital Signal Processor) which is completely dedicated to AI signal processing. This configuration eliminates the need for high-performance processors or external memory, making it ideal for edge AI systems. It reduces data transmission latency, power consumption, and communication costs, and addresses privacy concerns.
The IMX542 has a stacked configuration that consists of a pixel chip and logic chip which are equipped with AI image analysis and processing functionalities. The sensor outputs metadata (semantic information belonging to image data) instead of image information, to reduce data volume and address privacy concerns. It is available in a ceramic LGA package that measures 21 x 20 mm with black and white/Bayer filters and is ideal for industrial equipment applications.
