The MDL-1-6-FA-P from Newport Corporation is a Variable Delay Line that has an optical delay range of up to 560 ps. It operates at a wavelength of 1550 ± 50 nm and delivers maximum optical power of 300 mW. This motorized variable delay line has a typical insertion loss of 1 dB, an extinction ratio of over 18 dB, and a return loss of 50 dB. It has ten selectable speed levels from 0.01 ps/s to 256 ps/s with an optical delay accuracy of ± 0.01 ps and an optical delay resolution of 1 fs. This delay line can be controlled via a panel keypad and RS-232 interface.

The MDL-1-6-FA-P features a 2 × 16 character LCD display and has point-to-point, continuous scan & remote-control operation modes. It has PM fiber pigtails with an FC/APC connector. This delay line requires a DC supply of 12 V and consumes 1 A of current. It is available in a compact and rugged package design that measures 1.6 × 4.4 × 8.9 inches and is ideal for network equipment & test instrument integration, precision optical path length control or timing alignment, time division multiplexing (TDM), pulse alignment, optical spectrum analysis, interferometry, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) applications.
