The SPIE community, organizers of leading European photonics event, SPIE Photonics Europe, have announced the hosting of the SPIE Photonics Europe Digital Forum - a newly launched virtual version of SPIE Photonics Europe 2020 event. Photonics Europe 2020 was cancelled in lieu of the global covid-19 outbreak.

The SPIE Photonics Europe Digital Forum is a newly launched version of SPIE Photonics Europe 2020, reimagined into a convenient, high-quality, and timely method to share emerging research and technology advances throughout the photonics community — from digital optics and quantum technologies to biophotonics, optical imaging, sensing, and metrology. The digital event will be held from April 06-10, 2020.

Through the digital forum, attendees can:

  • Watch presentations on your own schedule, all presentations will be continually available throughout the forum week.
  • Engage authors by posting questions for them to answer in a chat-like feature.
  • Gain continued access to research — sign up includes free access to the SPIE Photonics Europe Digital Forum Proceedings.
  • Keep dialog and information dissemination open for the scientific community, even though we cannot meet face-to-face for valuable discussions.

For Authors

While although the deadline has passed (28 March), authors have been requested to continue uploading self-recorded presentations and manuscripts. SPIE will be doing its best to make the materials available for as much of the Digital Forum as possible.

More than 700 Online Presentations Sharing Cutting-Edge Research

Authors previously prepared to present their research in Strasbourg have been busy uploading pre-recorded presentations and manuscripts. There will be over 700 presentations and 500 manuscripts available during the forum covering these exciting topics:

Metamaterials

Nanophotonics

Micro-Structured and Specialty Optical Fibres

Biophotonics

Optical Micro- and Nanometrology

Semiconductor Lasers and Laser Dynamics

Semiconductor Lasers and Laser Dynamics

Photonics for Solar Energy

Optics, Photonics and Digital Technologies for Imaging Applications

Optical Sensing and Detection

Quantum Technologies

Advances in Ultrafast Condensed Phase Physics

Unconventional Optical Imaging

THz Photonics

Digital Optics for Immersive Displays

Silicon Photonics

Fiber Lasers and Glass Photonics

Organic Electronics and Photonics

Digital Forum Plenary Speakers

The following plenary presentations will be included as part of the SPIE Photonics Europe 2020 Digital Forum. Pre-recorded presentations will be available anytime throughout the forum. Take the opportunity to watch the presentations and ask questions for the speakers to respond to during the forum. Additional speakers will be added to the programme leading up to the event.

Plenary Presentations include:

  • Computational Microscopy - Laura Waller, University of California, Berkeley (USA)
  • Naturally Fast and Low Power Electro-optic Polymer Optical Devices are Ideally Positioned for the Next-Generation Internet Photonics Roadmap - Michael Lebby, CEO Lightwave Logic (UK)
  • The Funding Opportunities of the European Research Council - Anna G. Mignani, European Research Council Executive Agency (Belgium) and Istituto di Fisica Applicata “Nello Carrara” (Italy)

SPIE Digital Forums

SPIE Digital Forums, like other SPIE in-person conferences, offer a rich exchange of research and advancements, made accessible via the SPIE Digital Library online platform. Together we can move scientific discussion forward during this time when we cannot meet face-to-face.

During the forum, participants from the global photonics community are encouraged to engage with the authors' works by watching presentations and posting questions and comments. Authors will respond to questions throughout the week.

Why the Photonics Europe Digital Forum?

SPIE had to cancel the in-person gathering due to the global COVID-19 health crisis. Yet it was important for the SPIE community to report the advances many had hoped to present at SPIE Photonics Europe. Thus this new method has been created to continue the information exchange and networking that the community values and relies on. Scientists and engineers in optics and photonics are making great progress, so please plan to participate and continue to drive breakthroughs in this field.

There is no cost for the SPIE Photonics Europe Digital Forum, so sign up now to view the presentations and gain access to the proceedings. The SPIE community looks forward to your participation.
