The Optical Society (OSA) is hosting a variety of special events during this year's LASER World of Photonics Congress in Munich, Germany from June 25 - 29. OSA is a co-sponsor of both CLEO/Europe – EQEC 2017 and the European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO 2017). In addition to onsite events, OSA members will participate as plenary speakers and give technical presentations.
Key Highlights of OSA’s participation include:
Plenary Speakers: OSA Fellows Sir David Payne and Ferenc Krausz will provide keynote addresses during CLEO/Europe – EQEC. Payne will deliver the CLEO/Europe plenary keynote speech, “From Optical Fibre to Amplifiers and High Power Laser,” on 26 June. Krausz will provide the keynote presentation “Attosecond Metrology 2.0, Solid-state Instrumental Paves the Way Towards Real-World Applications,” during the EQEC 2017 plenary session on 27 June.
The European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (EBCO 2017) Plenary Session: ECBO brings together scientists, engineers and clinicians who work with optics and photonics to solve problems in medicine and biomedicine. This year’s plenary session features two outstanding speakers, Ed Boyden from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and OSA Fellow Aydogan Ozcan from University of California. The plenary session takes place on 27 June 2017. The session will be jointly hosted by OSA and SPIE.
Herbert Walther Award: The Herbert Walther Award will honor Professor Herbert Walther for the seminal influence of his ground-breaking innovations in quantum optics and atomic physics, and for his wide-ranging contributions to the international scientific community. The award is jointly made by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) and The Optical Society, and is presented by each society in alternate years. This year’s winner is Randall Hulet of Rice University for his pioneering achievements in the field of ultracold atomic gases, including the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation with attractive interactions and groundbreaking studies of atomic fermions. Following an awards ceremony and luncheon on 27 June, Hulet will present an invited talk, “Formation of Matter-Wave Soliton Trains by Modulational Instability".
OSA Member Reception: OSA members attending the meeting will have the chance to enjoy a festive evening with colleagues and connect with others in the industry during the OSA Member Reception. The reception will take place at Augustiner Keller in München on 25 June.
OIDA Networking Dinner: Jointly hosted by OSA, APS and IEEE, this special reception provides an opportunity for colleagues in the optics and photonics community to learn, share and engage while discussing the important topic of diversity in the field. The event takes place Monday, 15 May.
VIP Industry Leaders Networking Lunch: Sponsored by Go!Foton, the OSA Industry Development Associates, this session brings together industry executives with recent graduates and students for in-person conversations where executives share their stories on everything from how they started their careers and lessons learned along the way, to using their degree in an executive position. The program starts with informal networking during lunch and then transitions into "speed meetings" - small, brief visits with 6-7 executives to discuss careers, industry trends or other career topics.
CAM Lounge: The Centennial Authentic Moments (CAM) videos are an opportunity for OSA members to share their stories in optics and photonics. Tell us who inspired your career what excites you about your current work. These short videos are shown on the OSA website, on social media and at conferences. The CAM Lounge will be located in Konigsee Room in the International Congress Center, Munich.
OSA Stand: Learn more about The Optical Society and join or renew membership while at LASER 2017. The stand will be located at Entrance West, a concourse between the technical conference rooms and the main exhibit hall.
