With the cancellation of the 2020 edition of its Defense + Commercial Sensing event, SPIE, has announced the hosting of the SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing Digital Forum from April 27 - May 01, 2020. The digital forum is a reimagined version of the original event into a convenient, high-quality, and timely method to share emerging research and technology advances throughout the photonics community. There is no cost to register for the forum and to view the presentations.
What is the Digital Forum?
SPIE Digital Forums, like other in-person conferences, offer a rich exchange of research and advancements, made accessible via the SPIE Digital Library online platform. Together it can move scientific discussion forward during this time when personal interactions have been limited.
The upload site for the SPIE Digital Library platform allows oral and poster authors from the conference program to share their self-recorded presentations (audio and PowerPoint). During the live phase of the forum, participants from the global photonics community are encouraged to engage with the authors' works by watching presentations and posting questions and comments. Authors will respond to questions throughout the week.
During the Defense + Commercial Sensing digital forum week, attendees can watch presentations on their own schedule, post questions to authors, and engage with their colleagues. Authors will respond to questions received through the platform.
Why the Digital Forum?
While SPIE had to cancel the in-person gathering due to the global COVID-19 health crisis, it knows how important it is for the SPIE community to report the advances many had hoped to present at SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing. SPIE thus created this new method to continue the information exchange and networking that the community values and relies upon.
Meanwhile, SPIE is also in process of refunding or crediting registration fees for SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing 2020, and is actively reaching out to the community to participate in this free event instead. Scientists and engineers in optics and photonics are making great progress, so it has been advised to plan to participate and continue to drive breakthroughs in this field.

Presentations
Authors of oral and poster presentations still have the opportunity to present their research to an online audience during the SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing Digital Forum. Similar to the onsite experience, authors will upload their prerecorded presentations and written proceedings. Then, during the forum 27 April - 1 May 2020, participants from the global photonics community are encouraged to engage with the authors' works by watching presentations and posting questions to authors. Authors will be able to respond to questions received through the platform.

Virtual Exhibition
While the original event has changed from an in-person to a remote format, SPIE wants to recognize the organizations that continue to support the photonics community and SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing. Take a tour through SPIE’s Virtual Exhibition Hall and search and peruse the company listings to find company descriptions, website links, and contact information.
Registration details for the SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing Digital Forum will be made available soon.
