Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), the leading global organization dedicated to advancing fiber optic sensing technologies, has announced a strategic leadership transition that positions the association for continued growth and innovation in the rapidly expanding fiber sensing market.

Nilson Gabela, Senior Manager of Market & Technology Development, Optical Cable at Corning Incorporated, has been appointed Chairman of FOSA's Board of Directors. Simultaneously, Dr. David Chen, Chief Technology Officer of Go!Foton, has been named Vice Chairman. These appointments follow the transition of Jon Beckman, Director of Instruments Business Operations at VIAVI Solutions, who stepped down as Chairman due to expanded responsibilities at his company but will continue his valuable service as a Board member.

"This leadership transition represents a natural evolution as our industry enters an unprecedented period of growth," said Jon Beckman. "Having dedicated my tenure to establishing FOSA as the premier voice for fiber optic sensing, I'm confident that Nilson and David will build upon our foundation to drive even greater innovation and market adoption. Their combined expertise in technology development and commercialization perfectly positions FOSA to capitalize on the tremendous opportunities ahead."

Gabela brings extensive experience in optical fiber technology development and global market strategy to his new role. His background in advancing next-generation optical solutions aligns with FOSA's mission to accelerate the adoption of fiber optic sensing across industries ranging from infrastructure monitoring to renewable energy and smart cities.

"I'm honored to lead FOSA during this transformative time for our industry," said Nilson Gabela. "Fiber optic sensing is becoming essential infrastructure for the digital economy. As we continue to advance the capabilities and applications of fiber optic sensing, I look forward to promoting collaboration, driving strategic growth, and championing the transformative impact our industry has across sectors.”

Dr. Chen brings deep technical expertise and a proven track record of translating cutting-edge research into commercial applications. His appointment as Vice Chairman strengthens FOSA's technical leadership and enhances the organization's ability to address the evolving needs of the fiber sensing ecosystem.

"The convergence of artificial intelligence, IoT, and fiber optic sensing is creating unprecedented opportunities to solve real-world challenges," said Dr. David Chen. "As Vice Chairman, I'm committed to fostering collaboration between technology developers, system integrators, and end users to accelerate innovation and ensure that breakthrough sensing capabilities reach the markets that need them most. The future we're building is one where intelligent infrastructure can anticipate problems before they occur and optimize performance in real-time."

Under the new leadership, FOSA will continue to expand its educational initiatives, industry standards development, and market advocacy efforts. The organization is particularly focused on accelerating adoption in high-growth sectors including:

  • Smart Infrastructure: Advancing structural health monitoring and predictive maintenance solutions
  • Energy Transition: Supporting renewable energy optimization and grid modernization
  • Industrial IoT: Enabling next-generation process monitoring and automation
  • Security and Defense: Developing advanced perimeter monitoring and threat detection systems

The leadership transition comes as the global fiber optic sensing market is experiencing significant growth, driven by increasing demand for real-time monitoring solutions and the expansion of smart infrastructure initiatives worldwide.
