Optical connectors were very hard to bring into commercial production, due to the requirement of very tight mechanical tolerances. So they have a very long history of improvement and cost reduction. The author remembers when making patch leads was a job for skilled engineers, and they cost about US$300 each! There were only two suppliers worldwide who could make suitably fine grained ceramic ferrules.
