An autonomous vehicle, also known as a driverless vehicle, can drive itself by sensing its environment. It utilizes various sensors (such as RADAR, LiDAR, and GPS) and vehicular communication systems to navigate to its destination. LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, is a type of sensor that provides high spatial resolution for safer and more intelligent systems. It originated in the 1960s and has been used in atmospheric research and metrology. LiDAR sensors are being developed as peripheral monitoring sensors for preventing traffic accidents. This article discusses the features, technological overview, prospects, and drawbacks of LiDAR technology in comparison to other available sensors in the industry.
