Ultracold atoms have a promising future in space, with applications ranging from tests of fundamental physics to the development of exquisitely sensitive quantum sensors for Earth monitoring, lunar prospecting and spacecraft navigation. To realize this promise however, cold atom sources must perform at or beyond the state of the art achieved on the Earth. Fortunately, the space environment offers several distinct advantages for exploring and extending the limits of Bose condensation and ultracold atom production.
