Muscle wasting is a progressive loss of muscle mass and function as a result of injury, disuse, denervation, aging (sarcopenia), cancer treatments (cachexia), or diseases like muscular dystrophies. This loss of muscle function can have profound negative effects on affected individuals’ mobility and quality of life. It is also a well-documented effect of spaceflight on astronauts and model organisms like monkeys and rats [1-4, and many others].
