The impact of short-term (one-year or less) space flight on human physiological functions have been documented fairly well. Shuttle flight and International Space Station missions have allowed us to determine impact on physiological systems ranging from hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, muscle atrophy and eye function. However, we do not have a good understanding of the impact of long-time space flight on physiological systems when it constitutes a significant portion of the animal’s life.
