Inorganic crystals are essential to almost all of today’s high technology industries. As described in the NASA MaterialsLab Workshop report from 2014 [1], they are required for “key components in microelectronics, energy generation (i.e. photovoltaics), and detector and sensor systems. Specific applications are numerous and include radiofrequency and terahertz detector systems, gamma-ray, X-ray, and neutron detectors, UV and IR lasers, electro-optics, and hyperspectral imaging systems.
