Non-equilibrium processes are ubiquitous. Natural and synthetic materials are rarely the result of equilibrium processes. Numerous processes that occur in non-equilibrium conditions [1, 2] have been exploited to achieve novel and often transformational technological advances in optical and aerospace materials, pharmaceuticals, food preservation and others [3].
