Closed-loop systems for waste stream processing and resource reclamation (e.g., solid waste management and water reclamation) remain a limiting factor for extended duration space missions contemplated under NASA's exploration initiative. This white paper provides a brief background of Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) technology along with some examples of SCWO's current terrestrial applications. This is then followed by a discussion of NASA's past and current work in the area along with a brief review of topics where focused research is needed in order to advance this technology beyond its current state.
