As a particle, massless photons carry light energy throughout the universe UV light is commonly used for disinfecting water, air, and surfaces; however, the wavelengths that are most effective at inactivating microbes are also considered damaging to human skin and eyes. This article gives an overview, for a general audience, of UV disinfection.
