A PSD basically consists of a uniform resistive layer formed on one or both surfaces of a high-resistivity semiconductor substrate and a pair of electrodes formed on both ends of the resistive layer for extracting position signals. The photosensitive area, which is also a resistive layer, has a PN junction that generates photocurrent by means of the photovoltaic effect. The PSD is used in a wide range of fields such as measurements of position, angles, distortion, vibration, and lens reflection/ refraction. Applications also include precision measurement such as laser displacement meters, as well as optical remote control devices, distance sensors, and optical switches.
