Frequency stabilization of a laser to a known reference is a common requirement in a number of applications, such as atomic laser cooling, absorptive sensing and precision spectroscopy. The most stable frequency references are atomic transitions and numerous techniques exist to obtain a suitable ‘error signal’ which can be electronically fed back to the laser to correct for frequency drift.
