The appearance of new services like high definition video streaming, mobility applications or cloud computing is increasing the demand of backbone bandwidth, saturating the current optical communication systems based on DWDM networks with 10–40 Gbps per carrier. To solve this problem the potential bandwidth of existing optical fiber networks has to be fully exploited. Modulations based on coherent detection and polarization multiplexing have been proposed to increase the transmission rate to 100–400 Gbps.
