With the advance of digital signal processing coherent transmission techniques and highly efficient formats are increasingly adopted in optical transport networks. In terms of component technology, complexity increases and performance specifications become demanding. While commercial 100Gb/s coherent systems are just becoming available, ubiquitous internet access, video IP traffic, high-definition TV broadcast and similar applications drive the need for transmission rates beyond 100Gb/s.
