Coherent detection methods have previously been considered as an attractive method of channel monitoring in telecommunications systems. Despite their superior performance, size and cost of such systems used to be prohibitive for integration into transmission systems. Instead tunable filter based solutions are most commonly used in current networks. The design of optical filters for these traditional channel monitors and the associated digital post-processing has typically concentrated on achieving adequate resolution to accurately capture the power in channels that are at least 50 GHz wide.
