For the transmission of signals at a 100 Gb/s data rate, a large variety of concepts have been investigated in recent years. One option is to transmit the signal on one wavelength (in other words, to use a single optical carrier); another is to partition the signal into signals with lower bit rates and transmit these on several wavelengths.
