Analog photonic links operating at 1550 nm require high-power and high-linearity photodiodes (PDs) in order to increase the Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR). In addition to this, high-power PDs are useful in a variety of different microwave photonic applications. To date, the majority of high-power photodiodes have a vertical configuration and either a p-i-n or a uni-traveling carrier (UTC) epitaxy. Although some of these PDs have shown saturation photocurrents > 100 mA, additional thermal control techniques and the use of temperature controllers are necessary. This can limit their functionality and can make some of these PDs impractical for system operation over a wide range of temperatures. On the other hand, waveguide photodetectors (WGPDs) integrating mode-converting taper waveguides have shown high responsivity and excellent high bandwidth performance with 3-dB bandwidths of the order of 100 GHz.
