Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS) based on Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) are now established as a key enabler of high-capacity optical communications networks. WSS form the heart of Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) which use the ability of an LCoS-based WSS to switch and attenuate the incoming signal on a wavelength-by-wavelength basis to create resilient, high-capacity meshed optical networks.
