This paper will examine the Directly-Modulated Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) laser as an alternative to the commonly used Electro-absorption modulator (EML) laser to meet these requirements. Transmitters to be used for NG-PON2 ONUs have to meet many challenging requirements, including very high side-mode suppression to avoid channel crosstalk, a high optical output power of 5 dBm − 10 dBm for the type A spec, or 3 dBm − 8 dBm for the type B spec, a transmission distance of 20 km, sufficient wavelength tunability to enable a 100 GHz x 4 ch WDM system, and burst mode operation for DWDM ONU optics.
