Space-division multiplexing (SDM) either employing multiple fiber modes or multi-core fibers has recently seen significant attention as a means to use space as an additional dimension to overcome the fundamental bandwidth limits of single-mode fibers. However for SDM to become a viable solution for high bandwidth transmission, it is necessary to create SDM equivalents of the components and subsystems employed in today’s networks.
