This paper focuses on the role active probes will play in assuring services across virtualized networks created on demand. Active probes can themselves be virtualized and launched as services are instantiated, placed close to the end user, where they are well positioned to test the specific performance of the service and its constituent VNF instances from the user's point of view. This is very different from today's strategies for implementing physical probes, which are installed at fixed points in the network and are unable to deliver fine-grained views of individual services.
