Dispersion is a well-known impairment in fiber optics that causes pulse broadening and can significantly increase bit error rate (BER). Historically, dispersion testing has been performed mainly in metro and core networks, but with fiber networks expanding and moving closer to the end user, new dispersion requirements are emerging at the edge of the network, e.g., in mobile backhaul deployments or client-side rollouts. This paper examines typical cellular backhaul topologies, shows where and why dispersion testing is required in these networks, and finally recommends the best dispersion testing approach for different topologies.
