In this paper, we will discuss the importance of complementing the constellation diagram analysis with time-domain information on the transmitted signal in order to quickly and accurately identify impairments. Characterization and testing have been performed using different solutions, from in-house analyzers built around receivers and using heavy signal processing to commercial modulation analyzers. Bit error rate (BER) remains one of the key transmitter-performance evaluation parameters, but additional information is needed to identify impairments. Constellation diagram analysis is one of the new tools used by engineers to characterize 100G DP-QPSK transmitters
