The ever-increasing need for additional capacity has remained a constant throughout the history of modern telecommunications. In optical communications, data rates of 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s brought about the development of transmitters using advanced technologies like phase modulation or polarization multiplexing, which led to advanced modulation formats: DQPSK, QPSK, DP-QPSK, 16-QAM, etc. New analytical tools had to be developed to properly characterize these new-and often coherent-transmitters, and this is where optical modulation analyzers like EXFO’s PSO-200 come into play. In this paper, we provide an overview of the main applications for optical modulation analyzers.
