It has become widely accepted that, when applied to next-generation networks, traditional IEC-recommended optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) measurement techniques fail to deliver the required accuracy. As these next-gen networks employ reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADM) and/or multiple-bit/symbol advanced modulation formats (as is the case with most 40 Gbits and 100 Gbit/s transmissions), use of traditional OSNR measurements leads to either over- or under-evaluation of the OSNR.
