Traditional networks were designed to handle near the maximum capacity they would be required to offer. The result? Wasted capital expenses and increased operational expenses once networks are operating. Software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) can improve service quality, and decrease capital and operational expenditures. SDN/NFV environments offer optimal use of capital expenses (physical infrastructure). The organization can be confident that the environment will be able to adapt to current needs. However, without a highly automated closed-loop service assurance system, an SDN/NFV environment runs the risk of incurring increased operational expenses: many highly skilled network administrators could be required to constantly monitor and adjust the environment.
