Wi-Fi technology is a well-established standard to access the Internet from almost any location (e.g. home, office, shopping mall, in-transit, public venues, etc.). Wi-Fi is used for accessing all types of private, commercial and business applications on the Internet such as voice, video, and data browsing. Almost all electronic devices today support Wi-Fi access using IEEE 802.11 standard protocols (a, b, g, n, ac, etc.). A recent addition to the mix is the ability to voice-call over Wi-Fi networks directly from smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. This service is called voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) or Wi-Fi Calling. Voice calling using over-the-top (OTT) applications such as Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat, etc., is already common with VoWi-Fi being a built-in capability of smart devices.
