Optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs) were initially introduced to measure the optical power of a signal as a function of wavelength or frequency. They gained popularity with the introduction of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), since standard power meters cannot discriminate between several wavelengths. However, despite the fact that most people are familiar with the typical applications of OSAs for troubleshooting a network or measuring the channel power and noise level, for a number of reasons, these unique measurement devices have not been widely accepted on the market. One such reason is that the true power of an OSA is, to a certain extent, underestimated, particularly when trying to maximize the potential of a fi ber span.
