As the demand for bandwidth continues to increase, carriers are forced to invest in long-term evolution, which is both costly and required. They must therefore invest knowing that services will have to be offered at an affordable price. One interesting cost-reducing option is the embedded bit error rate test (BERT) capability, which is built into system test cards. Originally, this was used by network element card vendors to internally verify the circuit end-to-end. The objective of this application note is to highlight the key limitations of the embedded BER test capability in today’s networks.
