Over the years, CWDM technology has become the most effi cient way of transporting Ethernet services and analog signals through metro networks. Considering the high demand from the enterprise market for Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet services, combined with strong pressure on the cellular backhaul and the ever-evolving RFoG/HFC, metro network fi bers are now playing in the “many hundreds of Gigabits” league. We cannot deploy any rate on any fi ber. For optimal deployment, we must understand and monitor the weaknesses of the metro networks. As usual, loss and refl ectance need to be optimized in order to guarantee good quality of service. However, single-mode fiber bandwidth is not infi nite and effects such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) will impact transmission performance.
