By nature, Ethernet is a bursty type of traffic: it is typically inconstant, often displaying utilization spikes-high spikes of network overload, or low spikes revealing underutilization of available resources. To mitigate the impact of this burstiness, network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and service providers (NSPs) rely on various techniques, such as traffic management. The techniques used for managing traffic, however, consist of software/hardware-based manipulations performed on the traffic-forwarding characteristics in order to meet performance objectives. These performance objectives typically include throughput, delay, delay variation and loss ratio, and are enforced by a performance contract between the service provider and the customer, i.e., the service-level agreement (SLA).
