It is a widely recognized fact: demand for bandwidth keeps growing. The problem is, laying out new fiber is extremely expensive, so alternative solutions are looking increasingly attractive. As they strive to reduce total network costs, network operators are considering options such as speeding up the per-channel data transfer, lighting up new communication channels or even finding ways to transmit farther without having to regenerate or reshape the signal. However, all of this is easier said than done. Sending more data down a fiber, over greater distances, brings into play various network characteristics, previously irrelevant, that can cause serious problems if not analyzed, understood and controlled. Carriers are looking ahead, and even though they are only using a few wavelengths now, they see the bottom-line benefits of a system capable of transmitting at 40 wavelengths or more. These large, powerful systems can take network performance to the next level, but they require proper installation, tuning and maintenance.
