The ever-growing demands for more bandwidth and higher speeds are driving new technologies and services into the local loop- services for which the telco OSP was not designed. These services are employing new and innovative techniques to adapt to the environment on-the-fly and to achieve record high data-rates and critical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) targets in an increasingly dynamic cable environment, yet this can be problematic. High frequencies are employed to achieve this; however the plant was not designed for this purpose. While the new technologies are adaptable to frequency and power levels, they require shorter and shorter loop lengths (due to high-frequency characteristics), which has numerous advantages.
