The search for higher bandwidth has led to an increase in the transmission rates of optical channels. Today, 10 Gb/s networks are commonplace, and 40 Gb/s systems will soon be deployed. These highspeed networks have brought new challenges to the test and measurement industry; certain optical phenomena, which have had negligible effects on system performance, are now of utmost importance in these higher-bit-rate systems.
