When a new business customer requires commercial services in an area served by a carrier-class Ethernet ring network, the costs of testing must not exceed the revenue nor should the testing procedure cause interference with any of the existing customers on the network. In order to provide services to the new location, cable multiservice operators (MSOs) must install new fibers (a lateral) from the entry point of the network to the customer premises, yet testing the link before activation poses a number of challenges. This application note compares a traditional and complex test method that uses transmission wavelengths to an innovative and simple test solution that uses a filtered out-of-band wavelength.
