Considerable effort has been placed upon the development of measurement techniques capable of accurately detremining PMD in optical fibers and components. This ability to measure the total multipath interference dispersion (MPID) is in many ways a significant advantage of these methods over pure PMD- measuring methods, Particularly foe testing components such as optical isolators. In a digital communications system, two fundamental types of signal degradation (as seen by the photoreciever) hamper overall system performance by leading to umwanted spreading of the pulse either on the time or intensity axes.
