Semiconductor laser diodes emit highly linear polarized light. When used as pump lasers for the purpose of optical amplification, a strong dependency of the gain to the polarization state of the signal is observed. This phenomenon is called polarization-dependent gain (PDG). In a network, the effects of PDG can potentially add to the effects of polarization-dependent loss (PDL) caused by passive components, which may, consequently, result in serious signal distortion that can impair network performance. Therefore, it is very important to control all components and optimize them so as to minimize PDL or PDG.
