Today’s OSP technicians operate a variety of testing equipment and work with sophisticated and complex transmission systems. Network improvements demand new test requirements and more precise measurements. Combine these factors, and the potential lack of compatibility and synergy between the different test tools rises. Furthermore, the multiplication of test sets and procedures, along with the size of some test tools, creates its fair share of logistical problems in day-to-day field-testing. Faced with these realities, test equipment manufacturers have redefined the design of network testing solutions. Consequently, Telcordia has proposed generic requirements for what it foresees as the next generation of outside plant test equipment: the universal test set (UTS). The UTS is a mainframe test set that can be customized by the end user to perform the specific tests required for each plant and system being used. “Universal” implies that the test unit can be easily reconfigured, and, also, that it can be used for almost all types of testing.
