As operators compete with each other to offer their customers more entertainment and communications services at a low budget, now more than ever, they are requesting that their plants do much more than what was expected of them in the past. New higher-rate technologies, such as ADSL2+ and VDSL2 enable the delivery of multiple streams of video to include high definition (HD), yet they require new levels of performance for which the outside plant (OSP) was not designed. A key challenge for operators today is to assess the quality of the last-mile copper pairs and their ability to support new technologies and services being deployed, especially IPTV. In order to minimize churn and to increase revenue, operators are deploying new services to their customers (such as IPTV).Yet, the wire pairs carrying these new and advanced services require an assessment of their ability to carry the very-high data rates, and operators often end up grooming these wire pairs−just to be sure.
