Ethernet has become the most prolific technology used to deploy new services in next-generation networks. As these Ethernet services are rolled out, network operators must ensure that their networks provide the performance and reliability that their customers expect, which means using the proper test equipment and procedures. Increasingly, network operators are adopting testing schemes that focus around centralized testing from the central office and the customer site. A range of portable test equipment is already available for Ethernet testing; however, their form factor and the degree to which they can be controlled are not suited for central office operations.
