The telecommunication market is evolving under many different pressures from business and capacity issues to technology issues. A major element of the evolution is conversion to optical networks for certain markets. With respect to those optical networks and regardless of what the drivers are, it seems clear that some level of automation will be needed in the optical network components fabrication processes. Costs need to be reduced. Yields and reliability need improvement. Eventually throughput to meet future demand will become a major factor. The technology of connecting photon-transmitting devices requires a level of alignment far more critical than connecting wires for current flow and at dimensions associated with integrated chip manufacture.
