ROADM deployments have been especially popular since network operators began providing high-speed Internet and commercial services, which produced a significant increase in the traffic flowing through their metropolitan Ethernet networks. So far, ROADMs have not made too many inroads in the access portion of the operators’ networks mainly because the need for dynamic change is less frequent in these optical routes. Although the capacity of this section of the network does grow and does need to scale, when a new route is provisioned, it typically remains static for a long time. When and if more bandwidth is required, new blades or racks are simply added, creating optical-channel-provisioning modifications deeper in the network; i.e., in the metro or long-haul sections, rather than in the access part of the network.
