Operating and maintaining telecommunication networks is a complex task. Technicians and engineers often rely on bit error rate (BER) as the main tool to establish information degradation; however, it is often only available at the receiver. If the BER were available at each network component, diagnostic and incident prevention would be greatly facilitated. In this application note, we discuss how an in-service Pol-Mux OSNR (optical signal-to-noise ratio) method can help network maintenance and troubleshooting by providing key insights at any critical point in the network. We also share the best practices for using EXFO’s in-service Pol-Mux OSNR method.
