The feed gas for industrial air separation units has critical limits on the acceptable level of contamination, as do the purified gas products. Hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and water, especially, must be tightly controlled in the incoming air. This presents a unique analytical problem, since the presence of relatively high levels of moisture in ambient air makes the quantitative determination of contaminants at the ppm level difficult for conventional approaches to hydrocarbon and gaseous component analysis. Conventional methods for these analyses require that the user employ multiple instruments and techniques.
